When longtime KIPP supporters Carol and Gene Ludwig heard stories of alumni being forced to put their postsecondary plans on hold, or drop out, because they couldn’t pay a bill, they worked with KIPP to establish the Carol and Gene Ludwig Persistence Fund.

“The law itself is about giving everybody a fair shake. That is what a democratic society is all about,” said Gene Ludwig ’73. “If that is what we think we’re teaching at law school — that everyone should be treated equally before the law — we must treat students equally by making sure each one can get the finest legal education.”

Using both mouse and human brain tissue, researchers at Yale School of Medicine have discovered that SARS-CoV-2 can directly infect the central nervous system and have begun to unravel some of the virus’s effects on brain cells.

Researchers at Yale University and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard screened hundreds of millions of cells exposed to the COVID-19 and MERS viruses and identified dozens of genes that both enable the viruses to replicate in cells and also those that seem to slam the door on the virus.

Immune profiling revealed an overall increase in innate cell lineages, with a concomitant reduction in T cell number. An early elevation in cytokine levels was associated with worse disease outcomes.

The findings could help researchers develop new therapies for conditions such as preeclampsia in pregnancy as well as certain types of cancer characterized by activity from single strands of DNA, the researchers said. The research was primarily funded by National Institutes of Health and the Ludwig Family Foundation.

The Ludwig Family Foundation has made a substantial gift to support Yale’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The donation will fund the laboratories of at least six scientists on the Yale School of Medicine faculty, for work on vaccine development to prevent future outbreaks as well as treatments for people who are already infected.

Starting this month, the KIPP Foundation, with support from the Ludwig Family Foundation and UBS, is launching KIPP’s National Nudge Texting Pilot in eight regions throughout the United States to combat this national problem. This pilot is distinct from many other nudge programs as it marks one of the first times a major national network of students attending many universities is using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Steve Ramirez, a Boston University neuroscientist fascinated by memory, believes that a small structure in the brain could hold the keys to future therapeutic techniques for treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD, someday allowing clinicians to enhance positive memories or suppress negative ones. His work is supported in part by a grant from the Ludwig Family Foundation.

New research shows memories are pliable if you know which regions of the brain’s hippocampus to stimulate — a finding that could someday enable personalized treatment for people with PTSD, depression and anxiety.

This year KIPP Bay Area Public Schools, KIPP Memphis Collegiate Schools, KIPP NYC Public Schools and KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools will each receive up to $40,000 a year from the Ludwig Foundation to offer the microgrant. The KIPP DC program receives $50,000 a year and provides financial support to 10 to 15 alumni annually.

Earlier this month, KIPP Philadelphia announced it’s one of four regional KIPP networks that will receive money to start “persistence” funds. With $37,500 in seed money from the Ludwig Family Foundation — co-chaired by Eugene Ludwig, a financial consultant and former Clinton administration official — KIPP Philadelphia will be able to give out “microgrants” to alumni besieged by unexpected money woes.

KIPP schools in Washington, DC, started piloting their own microgrant program beginning in 2014, funded by the Ludwig Family Foundation. Over the past four years, KIPP DC has offered 39 persistence grants to alumni in college, and 95% are persisting towards their degree or have already graduated.

With support from the Ludwig Family Foundation, the KIPP Foundation announced today that it will establish a microgrant program in four communities to help KIPP alumni persist through college. The new KIPP National Ludwig College Persistence Fund will build off the success of a similar grant program launched in 2014 by KIPP DC and the Ludwig Family Foundation.

KIPP Memphis Collegiate Schools was one of four charter networks nationwide selected for a $40,000 grant to launch a “college persistence fund,” which will provide small, emergency grants to help KIPP Memphis graduates pay for college. KIPP Bay Area Public Schools, KIPP NYC Public Schools, and KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools were also selected by the Ludwig Family Foundation to receive grants.
